A basement window is not a small window. It is a normal window with most of the sky taken away, and that distinction changes which published guidance applies to you.
The practical version: find your window's direction, measure the distance from the glass to the plant, then apply one downward adjustment for the ground outside. What you are left with is a real band on a real chart, and for most basement apartments it is the low band or nothing at all.

Why a ground-level window is a modifier problem, not a size problem
University of Georgia Extension lists what changes the light in a given spot: "the amount of light in a given location is variable, it is affected by the presence of trees outdoors (may shade at certain times), roof overhangs (may shade at certain times), wall color (reflectance), window curtains, day length, time of day, and time of year." It adds the blunt version: "If there is a wide overhang covering the windows outside, the sun may not enter the room at all" (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28).
That list was written for a house. Translate it for a basement and every item gets worse.
- The overhang is the ground. A window well, a raised bed, a path, a neighbor's fence line or the sidewalk sits directly above your glass and cuts off the upper part of the sky, which is the part carrying the most light.
- Wall color becomes well color. If your window sits in a well, the well's lining is now the reflective surface deciding how much light turns the corner into your room. A pale, clean well wall is worth more than a dark or planted one.
- Trees are at eye level. A shrub that would be irrelevant to a first-floor window sits square in front of a basement one.
None of that is captured by the fact that the window is short. A tall window with the same sightline would perform much the same.
Find your band, then take one step down
Start with the published distances. University of Illinois Extension gives them by direction (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28):

Then adjust, honestly:
- Stand at the window and look up through it. If you can see open sky, you have kept some of the aspect and can use the table close to as published for the first foot or two.
- If you can see only the far wall of a window well, or a wall, or the underside of a step, treat yourself as at least one band lower than the table says at every distance.
- If nothing on the table reaches the spot after that adjustment, you are off the chart, and that is a real finding rather than a failure to look hard enough. Nobody publishes a band for a room the sun does not enter.
Maryland Extension gives the reason the fall-off is steeper than it feels: light intensity "depends upon the distance of the light source from the plant and decreases rapidly with increasing distance" (Maryland Extension, lighting for indoor plants, read 2026-08-28). In a basement, the distance is not only across the room. It starts above the glass.
The one advantage a basement has, and it is real
A north-facing room and a basement look similar on paper and behave differently in one respect worth knowing.
Illinois notes that "light conditions change throughout the seasons," and specifically that "the sun is higher on the horizon in the winter (increasing the brightness indoors) and lower on the horizon in the summer (decreasing the brightness indoors)."
For a normal window, that is a winter bonus. For a window with the sky cut off above it, the seasonal effect is different: a low summer sun can reach under an obstruction that a high one passes over, so some basement windows are brighter in the shoulder seasons than in midsummer. This is worth watching for a year before you conclude a spot is dead, and it is one of the few cases where the room's best month is not the one you would guess. The second advantage is temperature stability. UGA Extension puts the tolerance range at "58 °F to 86 °F" and warns "not to allow temperatures to drop below 50 °F, or chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants." A basement usually sits inside that range with less swing than an upstairs room, which removes one variable rather than adding one. Check the actual temperature at the spot in winter before assuming it, especially near a window well.
What holds in the band a basement usually has
If your adjusted band is low, three plants have named extension sources describing exactly that tolerance, and each has a cost you should know before you buy.

The snake plant's cool-temperature line is the one worth flagging for this room specifically. It is the only plant in the table with a published cold tolerance figure, which makes it the better choice for a spot right at a window well in a cold climate.
If your adjusted band is nothing at all
Some basement apartments have a window that admits daylight without admitting sun at any hour. If that is yours, the answer is the same system we set out for a bathroom with no window, and it has a source behind it.
Mississippi State Extension states the practice plainly: "If you have plants in such low-light areas, you should occasionally move them to better light for 4 to 8 weeks" (Mississippi State Extension, Care and Selection of Indoor Plants, read 2026-08-28).
Two matched plants, one in the basement and one somewhere with a measurable band, swapped on a calendar reminder, with four to eight weeks treated as the outer edge. If the only better light you have is a friend's apartment or an office desk, that still works, and it is more honest than a plant list for a room the chart does not cover.
What a basement rules out
- Anything variegated, unless it sits in the first foot of a window that still sees sky. NC State states that for pothos "Low light can cause loss of variegation" (Epipremnum aureum, read 2026-08-28).
- Anything expected to grow rather than hold. In the low band you keep what you bought.
- Anything sold as needing no light. Every source above uses a tolerance word.
- Any plant chosen before the window well was cleaned. Clearing leaves, weeds and grime out of a well is the cheapest light upgrade in this article and it costs nothing.
Two things this page deliberately does not cover: damp, ventilation and mold in a basement are building conditions rather than placement ones, and the care routine that suits any of these plants belongs to a care guide rather than a placement one. Frequently asked questions
Can houseplants live in a basement apartment?
In the part of the room a measurable band reaches, yes, and the plants with named extension sources for deep shade are the cast iron plant, the heartleaf philodendron and the snake plant. Past that band no extension publishes a rating, so a rotation is the honest system rather than a plant list.
How much light does a half-height basement window actually give?
That depends on what is above it rather than on its height. UGA Extension's modifier list, overhangs, trees, wall color and curtains, applies directly, and a window well acts as a permanent overhang. Measure your distance on the Illinois table, then drop at least one band if you cannot see sky through the glass.
Is a basement too cold for houseplants?
Check rather than assume. UGA Extension puts the workable range at 58 °F to 86 °F and warns against letting temperatures drop below 50 °F for sensitive foliage. A basement is often more stable than an upstairs room, but the spot directly beside a window well in winter is the one to measure.
Does painting the window well help?
Wall color appears on UGA Extension's own list of what varies the light in a location, described as reflectance. A pale, clean well is working with that. No source publishes how many foot candles it buys you, so we will not quote a figure.
Should I use a grow light in a basement?
Possibly, and that is where this site stops. Supplemental lighting is a care and equipment question rather than a placement one, and a university extension publication is the right place for it.
Will a plant survive in a basement with no window?
No published survival time exists for a room with no natural light, and anyone giving you one is estimating. The rotation above is the answer with a source behind it.
A note on pets
Basement apartments put plants at floor level in a room animals share. Whether a species is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on. Check the plant by name against the ASPCA's toxic and non-toxic plant list, and take anything that has actually been eaten to a veterinarian.
