Plants for a Studio Apartment With One Window

One window does not give you one light level. It gives you three or four, laid out in bands running back from the glass, and the whole problem of a studio is that people treat the room as a single environment when the published charts say it is not.

Measure the room once, in feet, from the window to the back wall. That measurement decides which plants you can keep and how many can sit in the good zone at the same time. Everything else follows from it.

Your one window makes bands, not a room

University of Illinois Extension publishes light levels keyed to window direction and distance, which is exactly the shape a studio needs (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28):

A south-facing studio is the roomiest. Direct at the glass, bright to five feet, medium out to ten, low out to twenty. A twenty-foot studio with a south window is usable end to end.

An east or west studio is tighter. Bright at the glass, medium a few feet back, low from three to ten feet. Past ten feet you are off the chart.

A north-facing studio is the hardest room in this article. Medium exists only directly in front of the glass. Low reaches a few feet. Past that, Illinois publishes nothing at all, and that silence is the honest answer rather than a gap to fill with a plant list. The band you are in depends on which scale you read

Before you take any of those figures as settled, know that extension publications disagree with each other about what the words mean, and it explains most of the contradictions you will find online.

Illinois puts low light at 75 foot candles. University of Maryland Extension uses different boundaries entirely: "North facing windows or rooms that are artificially lit" at 25 to 100 FC, "East or west-facing windows" at 100 to 500 FC, and "South-facing windows or some west-facing windows" at 500 to 1000 FC (Maryland Extension, lighting for indoor plants, read 2026-08-28).

So a spot at 300 foot candles is bright on the Illinois scale and mid-range on the Maryland one. Neither is wrong. They are written for different purposes. What it means for you is that "low light plant" on a nursery tag is not a specification, and you should pick one scale, note which one you are using, and stop trying to average two.

Maryland also gives the number that makes a studio feel less generous than it looks: "The interior of a well-lighted home is often less than 100 ft-c, while outdoor light intensity on a clear sunny day may exceed 10,000 ft-c." Your bright, cheerful studio is at the bottom of a scale whose top is outdoors.

Triage: who gets the window

In a studio you are not choosing a plant, you are allocating a resource. Work in this order.

1. The front row is for whatever cannot survive without it. Anything whose appeal is variegation belongs here. NC State states that for pothos, "Low light can cause loss of variegation" (NC State Extension, Epipremnum aureum, read 2026-08-28). A marbled plant in the back of a studio does not die, it becomes a different plant, and if the pattern is why you bought it you have lost the thing you paid for.

2. The middle band takes the medium-light plants. NC State describes the spider plant as preferring "medium light levels yet can tolerate deep shade" while being "intolerant of direct sunlight" (Chlorophytum comosum, read 2026-08-28). That is a middle-of-the-room description, and putting it on the sill in a west-facing studio is a mistake in the other direction.

3. The back of the room takes the tolerant ones, and you accept what it costs them. Heartleaf philodendron "prefers medium light but will tolerate low light" and can "survive for long periods in extremely low light" (Philodendron hederaceum, read 2026-08-28). Cast iron plant is listed for "Deep shade (Less than 2 hours to no direct sunlight)" with a growth rate of slow (Aspidistra elatior, read 2026-08-28).

4. Anything past the published distances goes on rotation, not on a shelf. In an east or west studio that means past ten feet. The system is the one set out for a desk far from the window: two matched plants, one in the dark spot and one in the light, swapped on a calendar.

Four studio-specific traps

The sill is not one spot, it is the whole budget. In a one-window unit the sill is the only bright-band real estate you own, and it is usually about six inches deep. Filling it with five small pots because they fit means the plant that actually needed the light is standing behind another pot. Decide what the sill is for before you decorate it.

Furniture blocks light and nobody counts it. A sofa back, an open closet door, a monitor or a bookcase between the pot and the glass drops that plant a band even though the tape measure says otherwise. If the pot cannot see the window, treat it as one band lower than the distance suggests.

Everything in a studio moves. A studio gets rearranged more than any other kind of home, and a plant that spent three months in the bright band and gets moved to the back is not in a new spot, it is in a new climate. UGA Extension's guidance on introducing a plant to a location is to "place newly purchased plants in bright areas for at least 3 to 4 weeks and then move them to their final location" (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28). That is written for a new plant, but the underlying point stands: sudden changes of light level are the change a plant registers.

One window means one aspect, all year. A multi-window home averages out. A studio does not. Illinois notes that "light conditions change throughout the seasons," and specifically that "the sun is higher on the horizon in the winter (increasing the brightness indoors) and lower on the horizon in the summer (decreasing the brightness indoors)." Whatever direction your one window faces, you get that direction's seasonal swing undiluted.

How many plants a one-window studio actually supports

There is no published figure for this and we will not invent one. The plants-per-square-foot claim that circulates on the styling SERP has no source behind it and is not repeated here.

What you can do instead is count in bands rather than in plants. Measure the width of your window in feet and the depth of your sill. That is your bright-band footprint. Then count how many pots physically fit in it without one standing behind another. That number, not a rule of thumb, is how many light-hungry plants your studio supports. Everything beyond it must be a plant that a named source describes as tolerating the band it will actually sit in.

How many plants can I keep in a studio with one window?
As many as fit in the bright band without shading each other, plus however many tolerant plants you are willing to place in the low band knowing they will hold rather than grow. No extension publishes a plants-per-square-foot figure, and the version circulating online has no source attached to it.

Which direction is the best window for a studio?
By the published distances, south gives the most usable depth: direct at the glass, bright to five feet, medium to ten, low to twenty. UGA Extension separately calls eastern exposure the best light and temperature combination "for most indoor plant growth" because the plant gets direct morning light. South gives you more room; east gives you gentler light in the room you have.

My studio is north-facing. Is it hopeless?
Not at the glass. Illinois puts medium light directly in front of a north window and low light a few feet back. Past that it publishes nothing, so the back half of a north studio is unrated ground and belongs to tolerant plants on a rotation rather than to a plant list.

Do I need a grow light in a studio?
Possibly, and that is where this site stops. Selecting and running supplemental lighting is a care and equipment question rather than a placement one. A university extension publication is the right place to take that question.

Should I put plants on a shelf near the ceiling to save floor space?
Only if that shelf is inside a band you have measured. Height does not add light, and a high shelf on a side wall is usually further from the glass than the floor space below it, not closer.

A note on pets in a one-room home

In a studio there is no other room, so every plant is a reachable plant. Whether a particular species is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on and we will not guess at it. Check the plant by name against the ASPCA's toxic and non-toxic plant list before you bring it home, and take anything that has actually been eaten to a veterinarian.
