A south-facing window is the brightest position in a home, and in an apartment it is often not bright at all. University of Maryland Extension states plainly that the brightest light is found in a south facing window, bay window or sun room. University of Georgia Extension adds the qualifier the plant lists leave out: a southern window with wide eaves on the outside will receive about the same amount of light as a window with northern exposure. The balcony floor above your window is those eaves. Check the overhang before you buy anything that needs sun.
The overhang decides, not the compass
Georgia Extension's eaves sentence was written for a house. In an apartment building the same geometry appears four or five different ways, and all of them are above your head where you never look.
The balcony belonging to the unit above yours is the most common one. A deep window reveal in a masonry or concrete building is the next, because the wall itself shades the glass for most of the day. Then there are awnings, fire escape landings, sun shades built into newer facades, and the simple case of a taller building across a narrow street.
None of these change what your compass app says. All of them change what the plant gets. If any of them applies to you, treat the sentence "south-facing windows are the brightest" as unproven for your specific window until you have watched it.
How to read your own south window in one day
No source gives a foot-candle figure for an overhung window, because the answer depends on the depth of the overhang and on your latitude. What you can do instead costs nothing and settles it.
Look at the glass three times on a clear day: mid-morning, noon and mid-afternoon. You are looking for one thing, which is whether a hard-edged patch of direct sun lands somewhere inside the room and how far in it reaches. A bright window with no patch of direct sun anywhere is a medium-light window, whatever direction it faces.
Mark where the patch reaches at noon with a piece of tape on the floor. That tape line is the real edge of your sun zone, and it is worth more than any chart, because it was measured on your building rather than on an average one.
A south window is the only exposure with a whole room inside it
University of Illinois Extension's houseplant lighting chart is the only one that grades a single window across the full depth of a room, and it does it for the south exposure alone.

Compare that to a north-facing window, where the same chart puts medium light directly in front of the glass and low light a few feet back, and then stops. A north window lights a shelf. A south window lights a room, and 15 to 20 feet of usable depth is more than most apartments physically have.
Where "high light" starts depends on who you ask
Before you match a plant tag to a number, know that the published numbers do not agree with each other.
Illinois Extension calls 300 foot-candles bright and 1,500 direct. University of Maryland Extension puts low light at 25 to 100 foot-candles, medium-bright at 100 to 500, high at 500 to 1,000 and direct indoor sunlight above 1,000. Mississippi State University Extension is further away again: high is 1,000 or more, medium is 500 to 1,000, and low is anything from 50 to 500.
Read those side by side and a 400 foot-candle spot is low light to Mississippi State, medium-bright to Maryland, and better than bright to Illinois. None of them is wrong and none is measuring quite the same thing. The practical rule is to pick one source and use its scale from end to end, and never to average two of them into a single chart.
Zone 1: the plants that actually want the glass
A south sill in direct sun is the strongest light position an apartment offers, and it is wasted on anything that does not need it.
Jade plant (Crassula ovata), aloe (Aloe vera), echeveria (Echeveria spp.), haworthia (Haworthia spp.) and string of pearls (Curio rowleyanus) hold a tight, compact shape here and stretch out of shape anywhere else in the room. Put them on the glass and leave them there.
Clemson Extension's high-light list gives the non-succulent options for the same end of the room: Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), jade plant, Christmas cactus (Schlumbergera spp.), Norfolk Island pine (Araucaria heterophylla) and aloe. Clemson places high-light plants near windows or glass doors with western or southern exposures, which is the same instruction stated from the plant's side.
The two thirds of the room nobody uses
Most apartment collections are tropical foliage, and in a south room that means most of the collection lives away from the window rather than at it.
Clemson's medium-light plants are African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha), Boston fern (Nephrolepis exaltata), dumb cane (Dieffenbachia spp.), English ivy (Hedera helix), weeping fig (Ficus benjamina), schefflera (Schefflera arboricola) and spider plant (Chlorophytum comosum). Its low-light plants are cast-iron plant (Aspidistra elatior), Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum), golden pothos (Epipremnum aureum), snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) and parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans).
In a south-facing room those plants get their conditions at distance instead of at a different window. That is the real advantage of this exposure, and it is a placement advantage rather than a plant-selection one.
The seasonal reversal at a south window
The phrase "all-day sun" is where most south-window advice goes wrong, and Georgia Extension contradicts it in both directions.
In summer, according to Georgia Extension, the sun rises at a sharp angle and is high in the sky by noon, so direct light comes into a south window only at midday. In winter the low sun shines across the room for most of the daylight hours. The direct beam at a south window is therefore short and steep in July and long and shallow in January, which is the opposite of what the season suggests.
Two things follow. A plant that is comfortable in Zone 3 in summer can find itself standing in direct winter sun, and a south sill in July may deliver a narrower window of direct sun than an unobstructed east one does.
What a south window does that is not about light
Light is only half of what this exposure hands the plant. The other half is heat and dryness.
Georgia Extension gives the best temperature range for indoor plants as 70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit during the day and 65 to 70 at night, and notes that homes typically run 10 to 20 percent relative humidity, where below 20 percent counts as low. Mississippi State Extension puts centrally heated and cooled buildings at 10 to 30 percent, against the 70 to 90 percent of the native climates of most tropical plants. A sunny south sill sits at the dry, warm end of an already dry, warm room. Maryland Extension connects the two directly: symptoms of excess light are more severe when strong sun is combined with dry soil conditions. Sunburn, and the weeks that prevent it
Scorch on a houseplant does not heal on the leaf where it appears, so this is a problem to avoid rather than to treat.
Maryland Extension describes the damage as pale, bleached or faded areas that eventually become brown and brittle. It shows on the leaf surfaces facing the glass and usually within days of a move, which is the tell that separates it from the slow stretching and pale new growth of too little light.
Almost every case starts with a plant that was moved rather than a plant that was placed. Georgia Extension's instruction for a newly bought plant is to keep it in a bright area for at least 3 to 4 weeks and then move it to its final location, noting that some defoliation in that period is normal if it is not extensive and slows down after a few weeks. A south sill is the one position in an apartment where skipping that step is expensive.

Placement and pet safety are separate questions. Check any plant against the ASPCA's toxic and non-toxic plants database before it goes into a home with a cat or a dog.
