A houseplant goes where its light is, and in an apartment that is a far smaller set of places than the floor plan suggests. Answer four questions about your own unit before you choose anything: which way each window faces, what blocks it, where the heat comes out, and where the cold glass is. Read your apartment in five minutes
Stand at each window with the compass app on your phone and write down the direction. Then look at what is in the way, because that changes the answer more than the direction does: a balcony floor overhead, the building across the street, a tree that fills the view in July and is gone by November.
Next, find the heat. Walk the perimeter and mark the radiator, the baseboard heater or the forced-air register, and note which window is a single pane that goes cold at night.
That is the whole survey. University of Illinois Extension's houseplant lighting chart turns those two facts into distances, and it is the spine of the table below. Its useful headline is how far usable light reaches into the room: a few feet from a north window, 3 to 10 feet from an east or west window, and 15 to 20 feet from a south one.

The four window rows carry the rest of the apartment. The tightest of them is north, and the three-zone map for a north-facing window shows how the method works: measure out from the glass, put each plant in the band it can hold, and treat everything past that as a rotation spot.
The spots with no honest plant answer
Three places in a normal apartment have no permanent plant answer, and saying so is more useful than another list of tolerant species.
A windowless bathroom, an interior hallway and a desk on the far wall are all past the end of the published chart. Illinois Extension stops at 3 to 10 feet for an east or west window and 15 to 20 feet for a south window, and a north window's entry stops within a few feet of the glass. Nothing lives where no band reaches.
Rotation is what works instead. Keep the plant in a real light position most of the time, move it to the dark spot for a few weeks when you want it there, then swap it with a second plant. Clemson Extension gives the sanity check for whether a dim spot is viable at all: about 100 foot-candles for 12 hours a day is what it takes simply to maintain plant quality for a year.

When the plant is bigger than the spot
A floor plant changes the arithmetic, because the light that matters is the light at the leaves rather than the light at the sill. A corn plant standing four feet from a window has its foliage lower and further from the glass than a pot on the sill does, so measure from the pane to the top of the plant and read the band from there.
Choose the corner before you buy. A tree-sized monstera, a fiddle leaf fig (Ficus lyrata) or a weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) is the one purchase you will not want to relocate twice in a season.
One window, many plants: how to triage
In a studio or a one-bedroom the sill is a scarce resource and something has to lose. The ranking is not a matter of taste, and Clemson Extension effectively publishes it.
High-light plants such as weeping fig and English ivy (Hedera helix) need a western or southern window and cannot be demoted. Medium-light plants such as African violet (Saintpaulia ionantha) and Boston fern do well within several feet of those windows, or in an eastern exposure. Low-light plants such as peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii) and heartleaf philodendron can sit several feet back from an eastern window, or in a northern one.
So the sill goes to the high-light plant, the medium-light plants take the floor and furniture within a few feet of it, and the low-light plants fill the space behind them. Assign in that order and you will not have to redo it.
What November does to the plan
The heating season rearranges the room twice over, and the two changes pull against each other.
Light first. Days get shorter, so the daily total drops everywhere. But Georgia Extension notes that the winter sun penetrates farther indoors than the summer sun, so a south, east or west room gains reach into its interior even as it loses hours. A north room gets none of that, because it has no direct beam to lengthen.
Then heat. Wisconsin Extension's winter guidance is to keep plants away from heat vents, fireplaces and radiators where they get blasts of hot air, and away from windows and doors where they meet cold drafts, and it puts most foliage houseplants at 65 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit by day and 60 to 65 at night.
That is the November move in one line: closer to the glass for the light, off the pane itself, and out of the path of whatever is blowing hot air.
