Height does not buy light. A shelf at head height on a side wall is usually further from the window than the floor space directly below it, because you have moved along the wall as well as up it. That single geometric fact decides most of what will work up there.
The practical version: measure from the shelf to the glass, not from the floor to the shelf. Then pick a trailer that a named source describes as tolerating the band you measured, and accept what the band costs the plant's appearance.

Measure along the wall, not up it
University of Illinois Extension gives light bands as distances from a window (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28):

Run a tape from the shelf to the nearest window in a straight line through the air, the way light travels. In most rooms a bookcase stands against the wall the window is not in, which puts the top shelf several feet along the room as well as six feet up.
Then apply two corrections, both of which usually go the wrong way:
The shelf above it. A shelf inside a bookcase has another shelf a foot over its head, and that board is an overhang. UGA Extension names overhangs directly in its list of what varies the light in a location, alongside "the presence of trees outdoors," "wall color (reflectance)," and "window curtains, day length, time of day, and time of year," and states the extreme case: "If there is a wide overhang covering the windows outside, the sun may not enter the room at all" (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28). A shelf board is a small overhang at close range. The top of a bookcase, with nothing above it but ceiling, is a very different spot from the shelf immediately below it.
Ceilings are not reflectors of last resort. Light reaching a high shelf on a far wall has usually bounced off a ceiling, and Maryland Extension gives the reason that matters: intensity "depends upon the distance of the light source from the plant and decreases rapidly with increasing distance" (Maryland Extension, lighting for indoor plants, read 2026-08-28). A bounced path is a longer path.
The result for most rooms: the top of a bookcase is a low-band spot at best, and an interior shelf below it is worse. That is the same finding as the one on the tops of kitchen cabinets, and it is why a plant that looked fine at eye level goes lanky within a season of being moved up.
What the height actually does change
Two things, and only one of them is in your favor.
Temperature. UGA Extension puts the workable indoor range at "58 °F to 86 °F," with the best range "70 °F to 80 °F during the day and 65 °F to 70 °F at night," and warns "not to allow temperatures to drop below 50 °F, or chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants." Warm air collects near the ceiling, so a high shelf is usually the warm end of a room rather than the cold end. That keeps you clear of the 50 °F floor in winter, which is a genuine benefit next to a cold window. We could not find a published figure for how much warmer the top of a room runs than the floor of the same room, so no number is given here.
Humidity. UGA also states: "For interior plants, relative humidity below 20 percent is considered low, 40 percent to 50 percent is medium, and above 50 percent is high," and notes "most homes" have "10 percent to 20 percent relative humidity." That is the room, not the shelf, and no source publishes a shelf-height humidity figure. What it tells you is that the baseline is already at the low end of the published scale before height enters into it.

The spider plant fact nobody puts on a shelf page
People buy a spider plant for the little plantlets on arching stems. NC State is specific about what produces them: "Stolons and plantlets are light dependent and develop when the mother plant receives short days and long, uninterrupted nights, less than 12 hours of light a day, for at least three weeks."
Read that against a high shelf in a living room. Long, uninterrupted nights is the operative phrase, and a shelf in the room where you sit in the evening with the lights on does not have them. A shelf in a bedroom or a spare room does.
That is a placement decision, and it is the sort of thing a plant list will never tell you, because the list is not looking at where the plant lives. If the plantlets are why you want the plant, the shelf you choose should be in a room that goes genuinely dark at night.
Two habits that decide how a shelf looks in a year
Turn the pot. A trailer on a shelf is lit from one side and will fill out on that side only. A quarter turn on a fixed monthly schedule is the whole fix, and it costs nothing.
Decide where the vine is going before you place it. Pothos vines reach forty feet according to NC State, which means the length you get is a decision rather than a fact. Whether a vine trails down the front of a bookcase, runs along its top, or is shortened is a look you are choosing. What this page will not do is tell you how or when to cut it, because that is a care question rather than a placement one.
Hardware is also out of scope here on purpose. Hooks, no-drill fixings, brackets and how much weight a shelf takes are not questions this site answers, and a wet pot is heavier than a dry one. Take load and fixing questions to the manufacturer of the shelf or the fixing.
Which shelf to choose, if you have a choice
Given several shelves, the order of preference is usually:
- The top of the bookcase, on the window wall. Nothing overhead, and the shortest path to the glass.
- The top of the bookcase, on an adjacent wall. Nothing overhead, longer path.
- An open shelf with a wide gap above it. The overhang effect scales with how close the board above is.
- An interior shelf in a deep bookcase. Overhung and set back. This is the spot where nothing looks good for long.

Frequently asked questions
What is the best trailing plant for a high shelf with little light?
Heartleaf philodendron has the most permissive published description of the three: NC State says it will "tolerate low light" and can "survive for long periods in extremely low light." Pothos survives in low light too, but loses variegation there, so it is the better pick only if you are content with plain green or the shelf is bright.
Is the top of a bookcase brighter than the floor next to it?
Usually not. Light is measured as distance from the window, and a bookcase on a side wall puts the shelf further along the room as well as higher. Measure the straight-line distance to the glass and you will often find the top shelf is further away than the floor below it.
Why did my variegated pothos go plain on a shelf?
NC State states directly that "Low light can cause loss of variegation" for Epipremnum aureum. It is a consequence of the spot rather than a mistake, and the fix is a brighter shelf or a plain green cultivar.
Why does my spider plant not make babies on the shelf?
NC State says stolons and plantlets "develop when the mother plant receives short days and long, uninterrupted nights, less than 12 hours of light a day, for at least three weeks." A shelf in a room lit in the evening does not give uninterrupted nights. A shelf in a room that goes dark does.
How long will pothos vines get on a shelf?
NC State puts the trailing and climbing vines at "as long as 40 feet," so length is something you manage rather than something you wait for. How and when to shorten a vine is a care question this site does not answer.
Can I put a plant on a shelf above a radiator?
That is a temperature question rather than a shelf question, and it deserves its own answer rather than a line here.
A note on pets, and on what falls
A shelf puts a plant out of reach until the day it does not. Trailing stems hang down into reach, and a pot on a high shelf can be knocked. Whether a species is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on. Check the plant by name against the ASPCA's toxic and non-toxic plant list, and take anything that has actually been eaten to a veterinarian.
