An east-facing window is the one exposure a US extension service will call the best in the building. At 8 a.m. the direct beam is on the glass and you are in Georgia's numbers. By early afternoon the sun has swung around behind the building and you are in Maryland's band, with the room lit by ordinary diffuse daylight. Georgia Extension describes the handover plainly: as the morning progresses, the direct sun recedes from the room.

So the practical question for an east window is never how bright it is. It is how much of the morning that window actually keeps.

The three-zone map for an east-facing window

The same distance method that works for a north-facing window applies here, with far more room to work in. One thing to notice first: Illinois Extension's chart gives east and west windows identical distance bands. Distance alone cannot tell the two apart. Time of day and heat are what separate them.

Compare that Zone 3 to a north window, whose chart entry stops within a few feet of the glass. An east window gives you most of a small room, and that is why a one-window apartment with an east aspect is workable when a north one is a triage exercise.

Zone 1: who earns the morning beam

The sill is the only place in an east room that gets direct sun, so it goes to the plants that need direct sun and to nothing else.

Jade plant (Crassula ovata), aloe (Aloe vera), haworthia (Haworthia spp.) and hoya (Hoya carnosa) all want the beam and hold their compact shape in it. Zone 2: the default position for most of a collection

A few feet back from an east window is the least demanding growing position in a normal apartment, and most houseplants should simply live there.

Georgia Extension defines a sunny location as one receiving a minimum of four hours of direct sunlight. An east window's direct sun is the morning and only the morning, so whether yours clears that four-hour bar depends on the season, on how early the sun clears the building opposite, and on whether anything overhead cuts off the low morning angle.

Clemson Extension's placement guidance points the same way: it puts high-light plants such as weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) and English ivy (Hedera helix) at windows with western or southern exposures, and places medium-light plants in eastern ones. That is the split. If you bought a plant for its flowers, its red or silver coloring, or its tight rosette shape, an east window will keep it alive and may still not give it enough sun to perform. The east window's second job

An east window is also the safest place in an apartment to put a plant that has just arrived or has just been moved, and that is worth keeping one spot free for.

Sun damage is usually a transition problem rather than a brightness problem. A plant grown on a shaded nursery bench and then set against bright glass takes the hit, while the same plant introduced gradually does not. University of Maryland Extension gives the standard version of the fix for plants going outdoors: start with two hours of full sun per day and increase the exposure gradually.

An east window does that work for you, because it is bright for a few hours and then it stops, which is a built-in half day of sun. What changes through the year

The east window's seasonal problem is the sunrise line, not the light level.
