A west-facing window is bright enough for almost anything and hostile enough that most plants should not sit in it. The light chart treats it exactly like an east window. The afternoon does not: University of Georgia Extension calls western exposures interchangeable with southern ones for most plants, and notes that light from the east is cooler than light from the south or west and causes less water loss. Illinois Extension's houseplant lighting chart gives east and west windows one shared row: bright light directly in front of the glass, medium light a few feet back, low light 3 to 10 feet back. By that table, a west window and an east-facing window are the same window.
They deliver the same intensity at the same distances, so anyone reading a foot-candle chart alone will place plants identically at both, and lose the ones on the west side.
The variable the chart does not carry is heat. Georgia Extension puts it in the plant's terms rather than the room's: an eastern room is cooler than a southern or western one because the building absorbs less radiant heat, and eastern light causes less water loss from the plants. A west window collects its direct beam at the end of the day, on top of a room and a wall that have been warming since morning. Same photons, different afternoon.

The zone method used for a north-facing window works here too, with the logic turned upside down. In a north room the sill is the prize and the far wall is the problem. In a west room the sill is the hardest seat in the apartment and the middle of the room is the comfortable one.

Zone 1: what actually takes an afternoon beam
The west sill is a sun position, so put sun plants on it and stop trying to compromise.
Jade plant (Crassula ovata), aloe (Aloe vera), haworthia (Haworthia spp.), echeveria (Echeveria spp.), string of pearls (Curio rowleyanus) and hoya (Hoya carnosa) all want this and hold a tight, compact shape in it. Snake plant (Dracaena trifasciata) takes the position and stays narrow enough for a shallow sill. Clemson Extension names the two non-succulents that belong here as well: weeping fig (Ficus benjamina) and English ivy (Hedera helix) are high-light plants it places at windows with western or southern exposures.
What must not go on this sill is the tropical foliage most apartments are full of. Georgia Extension is specific that rainforest species, Chinese evergreen (Aglaonema commutatum) among them, are injured by direct sunlight on a windowsill. Those plants have no mechanism for an afternoon beam, and the damage does not recover on the leaf where it appears.
Zone 2: where most of the collection actually goes
A few feet back from a west window is the position most people should be using, and it is where the plant they were about to put on the sill belongs.
You are in Illinois Extension's medium band, out of the direct beam for most of the year, and far enough from the pane that the heat coming off the glass is not sitting on the foliage. Rubber plant (Ficus elastica), monstera (Monstera deliciosa), peace lily (Spathiphyllum wallisii), parlor palm (Chamaedorea elegans), pothos (Epipremnum aureum), heartleaf philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) and prayer plant (Maranta leuconeura) all do well at this distance.
The catch is that Zone 2 in a west room is not a fixed boundary. It moves with the season, and it moves in the direction nobody expects.
The seasonal reversal nobody plans for
A north window only gets darker in winter. A west window does something stranger: it gets deeper.
Georgia Extension notes that the winter sun penetrates farther indoors than the summer sun does, despite being weaker, which reverses the usual pattern of a dark room interior. In a west-facing room that means the low winter afternoon beam runs straight past the sill and into the middle of the floor. The plant you moved back to Zone 2 in June for its own protection is standing in direct sun in January.
That is usually a gift rather than a problem, because the winter beam is weaker and the room is cooler. It also means a west window has a rearrangement schedule that is the mirror image of a north window's. A north room's plants move toward the glass when the clocks change. A west room's plants move toward the glass in the heating season for the light, and back off the glass in the cooling season for the heat.
Two moves a year, marked on a calendar, is the whole of it.
Reading a scorch before you get one
Sun damage on a houseplant is permanent on the leaf where it appears, so the useful skill is spotting the conditions rather than the symptom.
University of Maryland Extension describes what excess light looks like: pale, bleached or faded areas that eventually turn brown and brittle, and it notes the symptoms are worse when the plant is also in dry soil. Georgia Extension lists the same thing alongside a subtler tell, which is leaves held stiffly upright rather than relaxed and open.
Two things are worth separating. Scorch appears on the leaf surfaces facing the glass, usually as a patch rather than a margin, and it shows up within days of a change. It is not the same signal as the stretched stems, small new leaves and pale new growth that mean a plant is short of light. On a west window you can produce both at once, scorch on the sill and stretching in the far corner of the same room.

The curtain, and when it is worth it
A sheer curtain on a west window is one of the few genuine fixes in plant placement, and this is the only exposure where it is clearly worth doing.
Maryland Extension gives it as standard advice: protect houseplants from excessive direct sunlight during the summer months by increasing their distance from the window or using a light shade, such as a sheer curtain. Those are two versions of the same move, and in a small apartment the curtain is often the only one available, because the distance option costs floor space you do not have.
The contrast with the other exposures makes the point. On a north window a sheer curtain is pure subtraction, since there is no glare to filter and nothing to gain. On a west window it converts an unusable sill into a usable one, and it lets a Zone 2 plant hold a Zone 1 position through the summer. If you have a west sill and one plant you want on it, the curtain is the answer more often than a different plant is.
What makes a west window harder than the chart suggests
Direction is the starting number. In an apartment, four things routinely make a west window more extreme than the table says.
A high floor with nothing to the west is the big one, because there is no building, tree or hill to cut the last hours. A glass wall or a floor-to-ceiling window puts the beam on the floor as well as the sill. A dark floor or a dark countertop under the window holds the afternoon heat after the sun has gone. And an air conditioning register aimed at the same wall gives the plant a hot afternoon and a cold air stream in the same hour, which is a placement conflict rather than a light problem.
