If your hallway has no window, no published light chart covers it, and the honest answer is that nothing lives there permanently. What does work is treating the spot as a posting rather than a home: two plants of the same tolerant species, one in the hallway and one somewhere with real light, swapped on a calendar.
That is not a dodge. It is the only approach for this spot with a named source behind it, and the rest of this page explains exactly where the published guidance stops and why the stopping point is the useful part.

Find your hallway on the chart, and watch it disappear
Start with the numbers that do exist. University of Illinois Extension publishes light bands keyed to window direction and distance rather than to how bright a room looks (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28):

Now measure from the hallway spot to the nearest window and find yourself on that table.
Most hallways cannot be found on it. A corridor between two rooms is typically past twenty feet from a south window, past ten feet from an east or west window, or has no line of sight to glass at all. Illinois publishes no band out there. It does not say the spot is unusable. It says nothing.
That silence is the single most useful fact about this spot, because every listicle promising you a plant that thrives in a dark hallway is filling that silence with a guess and not telling you it is a guess. We went looking for an extension publication that rates a windowless corridor and did not find one. If you find one, it beats this page.
Maryland Extension gives the physical reason the chart runs out: light intensity "depends upon the distance of the light source from the plant and decreases rapidly with increasing distance" (Maryland Extension, lighting for indoor plants, read 2026-08-28). Maryland also puts the ceiling in perspective: "The interior of a well-lighted home is often less than 100 ft-c, while outdoor light intensity on a clear sunny day may exceed 10,000 ft-c." A well-lit living room is already near the bottom of the scale. A corridor off that room is below it.
The number that decides your hallway is not brightness, it is the doorway
Before you accept that the corridor is hopeless, check one thing, because a lot of hallways are better than they look.
Stand at the plant's intended spot and look for glass. Not for brightness, for glass. If you can see a window from there, even at an angle through an open doorway, you have borrowed light and you can measure a distance to it. Put yourself on the Illinois table using that distance, then drop one band, because light that arrives through a doorway has bounced off a wall or a ceiling to get there and arrives at a fraction of its strength.
If you cannot see glass from the spot, you have no distance to measure and the table has nothing for you. That is the hallway this article is really about.
One more thing worth knowing before you write off the corridor entirely. Doors matter more than you would expect. A hallway whose bedroom doors stand open all day is a different spot from the same hallway with the doors shut, and if the plant is the reason to leave one door open, that is a real and free improvement. Why "it looks fine in here" misleads you
Your eyes adapt and a leaf cannot. A corridor bright enough to read a delivery label in can sit far below the lowest band any extension publishes. This is not a small error, it is an order-of-magnitude error, which is why so many people conclude their hallway plant "just died for no reason."
Maryland Extension puts a floor under the maintenance case: "About 100 ft-c for 12 hours per day are necessary simply to maintain plant quality for one year." Read that carefully, because the sentence is doing two jobs. It sets a figure, and it defines the outcome as maintaining quality, not growing. Even at that level you are holding a plant steady rather than watching it develop.
What actually holds longest in a hallway
Three plants come up for genuinely dark interior spots, and each has a named extension source describing what it tolerates. Read the tolerance language closely, because in every case the source uses a word like "tolerate" or "survive" rather than "prefers."

The cast iron plant is the one to reach for if you want a single plant that will hold in a corridor with the least intervention, and its common name is not marketing. It earns it in the NC State description. What it will not do is grow noticeably, so buy it at the size the hallway needs.
If the reason you want a pothos is the marbling, the hallway is the wrong spot and the source above says so plainly. Buy a plain green cultivar for the corridor and keep the variegated one where it can hold its markings.
The rotation, and the one figure behind it
For a corridor with no line of sight to glass, the working system is two plants, not a better plant.
Mississippi State Extension states the practice directly: "If you have plants in such low-light areas, you should occasionally move them to better light for 4 to 8 weeks" (Mississippi State Extension, Care and Selection of Indoor Plants, read 2026-08-28). That sentence is the whole system. Built out, it looks like this:
- Buy two of the same species at a similar size. Two cast iron plants, or two plain pothos. Matching them means the swap is invisible to anyone walking past.
- One goes in the hallway. One goes somewhere on the Illinois table, which in a rented apartment usually means a few feet from an east or west window.
- Swap them on a calendar reminder, treating Mississippi State's four to eight weeks as the outer edge rather than the target. Set the reminder, because the plant will look fine in week three and you will forget.
- Move them gradually where you can. University of Georgia Extension describes acclimatization as placing "newly purchased plants in bright areas for at least 3 to 4 weeks and then move them to their final location" (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28). That guidance is written for a plant arriving from a nursery, not for one coming back out of a corridor, so treat it as the nearest published anchor rather than a rule written for this case.
This is the same structure we set out for a windowless bathroom, and for the same reason: it is the only answer to a spot no chart rates that does not require inventing a number.
What a hallway rules out
- Anything variegated, unless you accept it going plain, for the reason NC State gives above.
- Anything sold on the promise that it needs no light. Every source above uses a tolerance word, and no source anywhere publishes a survival time for a lightless room.
- Anything expensive. The corridor is the spot most likely to cost you a plant, so it is the wrong place for your best one.
- A tall statement plant you expect to fill out. In the low band a plant stretches rather than thickens, and the slow growers stay the size you bought.
Hallway versus desk versus corner
These are all "far from the light" spots and they are not the same problem. A desk usually has overhead lighting on a weekday schedule and a measurable distance to a window, which changes the answer; we set that out in what actually lasts on a desk far from the window. A hallway typically has neither a window in sight nor lighting that runs all day. It is the harder of the two, and it is the one where the rotation stops being optional.
A note on entryways specifically
An entryway adds one thing a corridor does not have: a door to outside. Every time it opens in winter, the plant beside it takes the outside temperature for a moment. UGA Extension is direct about the floor: "Be especially careful not to allow temperatures to drop below 50 °F, or chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants." Its stated comfortable range is 58 °F to 86 °F.
So if the spot you have in mind is within a foot or two of an exterior door in a cold climate, move it further down the hall. This is a placement decision, not a care one, and it costs nothing to make.

A note on pets and reachable spots
A hallway is floor level and an entryway is where animals wait. Whether a particular plant is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on and we will not guess at it.
