Search this and you get heating and cooling contractors. Useful people, but none of them is writing about plants, and the plant question has a specific published answer they do not reach for.
Here it is: the damage attributed to vents in an extension publication is attributed to temperature fluctuation, not to cold air, not to dryness, not to the draft. That single distinction changes the fix, because a plant can be moved a foot sideways out of a fluctuation while sitting in the same room, the same light and the same humidity.

The one direct attribution
NC State's entry for the fiddle leaf fig states that the plant is "sensitive to overwatering and temperature fluctuations," and that brown spots may develop from "fluctuation in room temperature for heating or cooling vents" (NC State Extension, Ficus lyrata, read 2026-08-28).
That is written for one species, and it is the clearest published statement we found connecting a vent to a symptom on an indoor plant. Two things follow.
It applies to both seasons. The sentence names heating and cooling vents. A forced-air register in January and an air conditioning supply in July are the same problem wearing different clothes, and a plant that survives one may still be in the wrong place for the other.
The variable is the swing, not the setting. A register blows for part of a cycle and then stops. The plant in front of it does not sit at a temperature, it oscillates between two. That is the mechanism, and it is why "is cold air bad for plants" is the wrong question.
What the room-level guidance says
University of Georgia Extension gives the figures for the room the vent is feeding (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28):
- "Interior plants can tolerate and grow well in the 58 °F to 86 °F range because most indoor plants originate from tropical and subtropical areas of the world."
- "The best temperature range for indoor plants is 70 °F to 80 °F during the day and 65 °F to 70 °F at night."
- "Be especially careful not to allow temperatures to drop below 50 °F, or chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants."
- On humidity: "below 20 percent is considered low, 40 percent to 50 percent is medium, and above 50 percent is high," and "most homes" run at "10 percent to 20 percent relative humidity."
The room your thermostat holds at 72 °F is comfortably inside all of that. The four inches in front of the supply register are not the room, and no extension publishes a figure for them. We looked for one. If a temperature, an airspeed or a humidity figure for the air leaving a domestic register exists in an extension publication, it did not surface, and we are not going to substitute a guess for it.
Find the vent's actual reach, in one minute
The published guidance stops at the room. Here is how to find out about your own corner of it.
The tissue test. Hold a strip of light paper or a tissue at the spot where the plant would stand, while the system is running. If it moves, the plant is in the airstream. Step back six inches at a time until it stops moving. That distance is the vent's reach at that height, and it is usually much shorter than people assume.
The thermometer test. Put a thermometer at the plant's spot and read it twice: once while the system is running, once ten minutes after it stops. The difference between those two readings is the fluctuation NC State attributes damage to. A degree or two is not the problem. A large spread is.
Do both once, per vent, and you never have to guess again. It also tells you something the contractors' pages cannot: whether your particular register throws its air along the ceiling, across the floor or straight out into the room, which decides whether a plant at pot height is affected at all.
Placement moves, and what this page will not tell you to do
Everything here moves the plant. Nothing here modifies the vent. Closing, covering, redirecting or blocking a supply register affects how the system balances and is a question for your building or an HVAC professional, not for a plant site.
- Sideways is usually enough. Registers throw air in a cone. A foot to the side of the airstream is frequently outside it, and the light barely changes.
- Behind a piece of furniture, at pot height. A sofa back or a low cabinet between the register and the plant breaks the stream. Check the light did not drop a band when you do this; our spot-by-spot placement guide has the bands.
- Above a floor register rather than in front of it. A floor vent's stream rises. A plant on a low table right beside it may be worse off than one on the floor a foot away. Use the tissue at the actual height the pot will sit.
- Consider the seasonal swap. If the register only affects the spot in one season, the plant only needs to move for one season.
Which plants have a published tolerance for the swing
Very few plants have any published temperature figure at all. These do.

If you are choosing a plant for a spot you cannot move it out of, the snake plant is the one with the published tolerances on both axes. If you already own a fiddle leaf fig and it sits in front of a register, that is the one combination in this article with a source attached to it, and moving the plant is the cheaper experiment than replacing it.
The bedroom register, specifically
Bedrooms often have a register near the bed and a nightstand as the only plant surface, which puts the two together. Two things are worth knowing.
UGA's preferred night range is cooler than its day range, 65 °F to 70 °F against 70 °F to 80 °F, so a bedroom that cools at night is doing something the guidance actually wants. What it does not want is the plant sitting in the stream while that happens. Move the pot to the far side of the nightstand and you have kept the cooler night and lost the draft. The office register
The same logic, with one addition: an office system typically runs on a weekday schedule, so the fluctuation stops at the weekend. That is a fifth and sixth day of stillness the plant gets for free, and it is one of the reasons an office desk is a more survivable spot than its light level suggests. Frequently asked questions
Is an air conditioning vent bad for houseplants?
The published attribution is to temperature fluctuation rather than to cold air as such: NC State says brown spots on Ficus lyrata may develop from "fluctuation in room temperature for heating or cooling vents." So the question to answer is whether your plant sits in a stream that cycles on and off, which a tissue held at pot height will tell you in a minute.
How far away from a vent should a plant be?
No extension publishes a distance. Measure it yourself with the tissue test: step back six inches at a time until the paper stops moving. That is your answer for that vent, at that height.
Can I just close the vent in that room?
Not on our advice. Closing or blocking a supply register changes how the system balances and is a question for your building or a heating and cooling professional. Move the plant instead; it is free and reversible.
Which houseplant handles a draft best?
Of the plants on this site's shortlist, the snake plant has the most permissive published figures: NC State says it "tolerates low humidity and cool temperatures around 50 degrees." The spider plant has a published floor of 45 °F. Neither statement is specifically about moving air, which nobody publishes a figure for.
Does forced-air heating dry the air out too much for plants?
UGA Extension states most homes already sit at 10 to 20 percent relative humidity and that below 20 percent is considered low, so the room is at the bottom of the published scale before the system runs. No figure exists for the air leaving a register. The placement answer is to choose a plant with a published low-humidity tolerance; humidifiers and misting are care questions this site does not cover.
My plant is fine in summer and drops leaves in winter near the same vent. Why?
Because a supply register in heating mode and in cooling mode are different conditions in the same location, and NC State's attribution names both. Run the tissue and thermometer tests again in the season that is causing the trouble rather than assuming the spot is unchanged.
A note on pets
Plants near floor registers are at animal height. Whether a species is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on. Check the plant by name against the ASPCA's toxic and non-toxic plant list, and take anything that has actually been eaten to a veterinarian.
