Plants Beside a Drafty Window in Winter: Which, and How Far Back

Two things are published and one is not. Published: the temperature range indoor plants tolerate and the point at which chill damage is warned about. Not published: what the air actually does in the six inches between an old single-pane window and a pot standing on the sill.

That gap is why so much winter advice is vague. This page keeps the published parts, names the missing one, and replaces it with a measurement you can make in your own apartment with a thermometer.

The published numbers

University of Georgia Extension gives the whole frame (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28):

  • The tolerated range: "Interior plants can tolerate and grow well in the 58 °F to 86 °F range because most indoor plants originate from tropical and subtropical areas of the world."
  • The preferred range: "The best temperature range for indoor plants is 70 °F to 80 °F during the day and 65 °F to 70 °F at night."
  • The warning: "Be especially careful not to allow temperatures to drop below 50 °F, or chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants."

Three points worth pulling out.

Fifty degrees is a warning line, not a death line. The sentence says chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants. It is a threshold to stay above, and different plants sit differently against it.

Fifty-eight is where "tolerate and grow well" stops. So the band between 50 °F and 58 °F is neither comfortable nor catastrophic, and a lot of winter sills live exactly there.

Nights are supposed to be cooler. The preferred range wants nights about five degrees below days. A window that cools at night is not automatically working against the plant. It becomes a problem when it goes past the floor, not when it goes down.

The measurement nobody has made for you

Nobody publishes the temperature of a windowsill. It depends on your glazing, your building, your climate and your heating, and the honest position is to measure rather than estimate.

The set-back test. On the coldest night you get, put a thermometer on the sill, hard against the glass, and read it late at night. Then move it back four inches and read again the next night under similar conditions. Repeat until the reading sits comfortably above UGA's 50 °F line, and preferably inside the 58 °F to 86 °F range.

The distance at which that happens is your set-back, in inches, for that window. It is the number this article exists to help you find, and no page written for someone else's building can give it to you.

A few things that make the number worse, all of them worth checking with the same thermometer: single glazing, a gap you can feel around the frame, a metal frame, a north aspect, and a curtain drawn between the plant and the room. That last one catches people out. A curtain closed at night puts the plant on the cold side of the insulation, in a pocket that is colder than the room. If your plants sit behind the curtains, either move them into the room at night or leave that section of curtain open.

Which plants have a published cold floor

Very few plant profiles publish a temperature figure. These do, and for this spot the figure matters more than the light description.

The spider plant and the snake plant are the two with published floors at or below UGA's warning line. That does not make either of them frost-proof; it makes them the two whose publishers have said something specific about cold, which is more than can be said for most of the plants sold for windowsills.

The trade you are actually making

Standing a plant back from cold glass costs light, and in winter that is expensive.

Illinois Extension's distances are the ruler (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28): low light reaches "3-10 feet away" from an east or west window and only "a few feet away" from a north window. A set-back of a foot or two is nothing beside a south window and can be most of your usable range beside a north one, which is the site's hardest aspect and the subject of our north-facing window guide.

There is one piece of good news in the seasonal direction. Illinois notes that "the sun is higher on the horizon in the winter (increasing the brightness indoors)," so the months when you most need the set-back are also the months when the light reaches deeper into the room. That does not apply to a north window, which gets no direct sun to push deeper, but for east, west and south it partly pays for the distance you have given up.

Placement moves, ranked by cost

  1. Move back, by the distance your thermometer gave you. Free, reversible, and the only move with a number behind it.
  2. Move along the window to the part of the sill away from the worst of the frame gap. Test both ends; they are often different.
  3. Move the plant into the room at night and back in the morning. Tedious, but it is the move that keeps the daytime light and removes the coldest hours.
  4. Move off the sill for the season. A plant that lives on the sill from March to November and on a table from December is a reasonable arrangement, not a failure.
  5. Leave the curtain open on that section. Costs nothing, and it is the mistake most often made without noticing.

What this page will not do is advise you on glazing, plastic film, draft excluders or building repairs. Those are your building's business, and a plant is not a good reason to modify a window.

Is a cold windowsill worse than a dark corner?
They are different failures. A dark corner is a slow decline you can plan a rotation around. A sill below UGA's 50 °F line is a threshold the publication specifically warns about. If you have to choose, measure the sill first, because the corner's problem is predictable and the sill's is not.

Does the winter sun make up for standing plants further back?
Partly, and only for some aspects. Illinois Extension notes the sun is higher in winter, "increasing the brightness indoors," which pushes light deeper into east, west and south rooms. A north window gets no direct sun, so it gets none of that compensation.

A note on pets

Sills are reachable in many homes and cold-weather plant moves put pots in new places. Whether a species is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on. Check the plant by name against the ASPCA's toxic and non-toxic plant list, and take anything that has actually been eaten to a veterinarian.
