Where to Put a Pothos: Hang, Trail or Climb

Two published facts about pothos decide the spot before any decorating question does.

The vines get long. NC State says "the trailing and climbing vines can grow as long as 40 feet" (NC State Extension, Epipremnum aureum, read 2026-08-28).

The markings are conditional. The same page states plainly: "Low light can cause loss of variegation."

Put those together and the choice of spot is really two choices. Where does the vine have room to go, and is there enough light there to keep the plant looking like the one you bought?

The band that keeps the markings

NC State's light description is short and does two jobs: "It prefers bright, indirect light and survives for long periods in low light."

That is a preference and a tolerance, not one thing. On University of Illinois Extension's distances (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28):

Bright indirect is the bright row, out of the direct sun: directly in front of an east or west window, or up to five feet from a south window with something between the plant and the pane. That is where a golden or marbled pothos holds its pattern.

Low light is where it survives. Three to ten feet from an east or west window, fifteen to twenty from a south one. It lives there. It does not keep its markings there.

So the practical rule for placement is: decide whether you bought the plant for the pattern. If you did, the spot is a bright-band spot and there is no way around it. If you bought it as a green trailing plant, the low band is open to you and a plain green cultivar will be happier there than a variegated one that is fading.

Direct sun is the other end of the mistake. Maryland Extension describes excess light as producing "pale, bleached or faded areas" that "eventually become brown and brittle," caused by strong sun and heat breaking down chlorophyll in the leaf (Maryland Extension, excess light on indoor plants, read 2026-08-28). NC State's word is indirect, and a south sill in summer is not that.

Hang, trail or climb: a placement question, not a styling one

NC State describes the plant as having "cascading stems" and climbing using "brown aerial roots," and gives the length as up to forty feet on a vine, with a groundcover spread of "only 6 to 8 feet."

Each of the three habits puts the vine somewhere different, and each has a placement consequence.

Trailing from a surface. The vine falls from a shelf, a cabinet top or a mantel. The plant's crown stays where you put it and the vine hangs into the room below. The critical check is what the vine passes on its way down: a radiator, a doorway, a walkway, a countertop. Whatever is below the pot is where the vine will be in a year.

Hanging. The pot itself is off a surface. That is a load and fixing question rather than a placement one, and it is not something this site advises on. What we will say about the plant's side of it is that a hanging pot is usually further from the window than a surface at the same height, because it is out in the room rather than against a wall, and that costs light. Weigh the light against the look before you commit.

Climbing. NC State notes the aerial roots and the climbing habit. A pothos trained upward puts its newest growth at the top, which in most rooms is further from the window than the pot, and that has a direct consequence for the markings. If the plant climbs into a dimmer band, the new leaves are the ones that come in plain.

That last point is the one nobody makes, and it follows directly from the two published facts at the top of this page. New growth appears at the end of the vine, so wherever the vine ends up is where the variegation is decided. Placing the pot in good light and letting the vine wander into a dark corner puts the pattern in the corner, not in the light.

If the only spot you have is dark

Pothos is one of the plants most often put in a spot no chart rates. It tolerates that better than most, and it is still worth being honest about what happens.

Mississippi State Extension's guidance for genuinely low-light areas is a rotation: "If you have plants in such low-light areas, you should occasionally move them to better light for 4 to 8 weeks" (Mississippi State Extension, Care and Selection of Indoor Plants, read 2026-08-28).

For a pothos there is a second reason to run that rotation beyond survival: the plant in the light is the one holding its pattern. Swapping two matched plants keeps both looking better than either would if one lived in the corner permanently.

Temperature, and what is not published

NC State's Epipremnum aureum entry does not give temperature figures, and we are not going to import a number from anywhere else and attach it to this species.

What is published at the room level is UGA Extension's range: "Interior plants can tolerate and grow well in the 58 °F to 86 °F range," with the warning "not to allow temperatures to drop below 50 °F, or chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants" (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28). That is general guidance for indoor plants rather than a statement about pothos, and it is the best available anchor.

The placement consequence is worth stating: a vine trailing down past a cold window or over a radiator is in a different microclimate from the pot it grows out of. Check where the vine ends up, not only where the pot sits.

Where should I put a pothos in an apartment?

A note on pets and trailing stems

A trailing plant is out of reach at the pot and within reach at the end of the vine, which is the part animals find. Whether a species is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on.
