The snake plant has a reputation for going anywhere, and the reputation is doing it a disservice. Its own publisher's placement line is more specific than the internet's version.
NC State says: "Place in a location where it will receive direct sunlight only part of the day, 2 to 6 hours, as it will tolerate very low light" (NC State Extension, Dracaena trifasciata, read 2026-08-28).
Read that as two separate statements, because that is what it is. The recommended placement is partial direct sun. Very low light is what the plant tolerates. Those are different claims, and every "put it anywhere" article has collapsed the second into the first.

The spot NC State actually recommends
Two to six hours of direct sun, on University of Illinois Extension's distances (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28):

Directly in front of an east or west window is where "two to six hours of direct sun" lives. East gives morning sun and ends before the heat of the day; UGA Extension describes eastern exposure as generally providing "the best light and temperature conditions for most indoor plant growth" (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28).
If you want the plant to look its best, that is the spot. Everything below is about how far you can move away from it and what each step costs.
What it genuinely tolerates, and the two figures behind that
The snake plant has more published tolerance figures attached to it than almost any other common houseplant, which is why it turns up on this site so often.
- Light: "it will tolerate very low light" (NC State).
- Cold and dry: "tolerates low humidity and cool temperatures around 50 degrees" (NC State).
That second line is the one that earns it the hard spots. UGA Extension warns "not to allow temperatures to drop below 50 °F, or chill damage will result on some sensitive foliage plants," and separately notes that most homes sit at "10 percent to 20 percent relative humidity," which is at or below its own "below 20 percent is considered low" band. A plant whose publisher names both 50 degrees and low humidity is a plant built for a winter windowsill and a dry apartment.
NC State also calls it "quite durable, easily grown, and difficult to kill," with one condition attached in the same breath: "Well-drained soil and careful watering are a must; do not overwater, as the roots will rot." The durability claim is not unconditional, and the condition is a care matter rather than a placement one, so take it to a care guide.
The spots it hates
This is the part the "anywhere" articles skip.
Directly in front of a south window. Illinois puts that at 1500 foot candles, and NC State's recommendation is two to six hours of direct sun, not all day. Maryland Extension describes what excess light does: "pale, bleached or faded areas" that "eventually become brown and brittle," caused by strong sun and heat breaking down chlorophyll in the leaf (Maryland Extension, excess light on indoor plants, read 2026-08-28). A snake plant sitting on a south sill all summer is not immune to that.
A genuinely lightless room, permanently. "Tolerate" is not "thrive," and no source publishes a survival time for a room with no natural light. Mississippi State Extension's guidance for such places is a rotation rather than a resident: "If you have plants in such low-light areas, you should occasionally move them to better light for 4 to 8 weeks" (Mississippi State Extension, Care and Selection of Indoor Plants, read 2026-08-28). A spot chosen on the assumption it will grow there. NC State lists the growth rate as medium and the leaves at "up to 4 feet long and 2 to 4 inches wide." In the very low band you are keeping the plant you bought rather than watching it develop, so buy the height you want the room to have.
A high shelf, if the point is the shape. The snake plant is an upright, and its whole visual appeal is vertical leaves seen from the side. On top of a bookcase you see it end-on. That is a styling judgment rather than a survival one, and it is the reason a plant that suits a floor or a sill often looks wrong up high.

That last one is underrated in a small apartment. A plant that goes up rather than out is worth a lot on a four-inch sill or a crowded surface, and the snake plant's published leaf width is the reason it fits where a spreading plant does not.
The quarter turn
An upright plant lit from one side leans, and because the leaves are stiff and vertical the lean shows more than it does on a bushy plant. A quarter turn on a fixed monthly schedule is the fix, and it is placement housekeeping rather than care.
