A glass wall is not a big window. It is a window with every one of the things that normally softens light taken away, and the published guidance quietly assumes those things are there.
If plants keep scorching in your unit, this is why, and the fix is not a tougher plant. It is putting back, inside the room, the modifiers the building removed.

The list the extension writes, and the list your unit has
University of Georgia Extension sets out what varies the light in a location: "the amount of light in a given location is variable, it is affected by the presence of trees outdoors (may shade at certain times), roof overhangs (may shade at certain times), wall color (reflectance), window curtains, day length, time of day, and time of year" (UGA Extension, Bulletin 1318, read 2026-08-28).
Go down that list for a twentieth-floor unit with a glass wall:
- Trees outdoors: none. You are above them.
- Roof overhangs: none, unless the floor above has a balcony slab that projects, in which case you do have one and it matters a great deal.
- Wall color: there is no wall on that side. There is glass.
- Window curtains: whatever you install, and in a new build often nothing.
- Day length, time of day, time of year: unchanged, and now undiluted.
UGA also says the extreme version of the first two: "If there is a wide overhang covering the windows outside, the sun may not enter the room at all." A high-rise unit is that sentence inverted. Nothing is covering the windows, so the sun enters the room completely.
That is the whole finding. Your unit is not off the top of the chart because it is high up. It is off the top because every modifier in UGA's list has been removed at once.
What the published bands actually say about your room
University of Illinois Extension's distances (Illinois Extension, houseplant lighting, read 2026-08-28):

Two useful consequences.
Depth is your friend. A south-facing glass wall gives you direct at the glass, bright to five feet, medium to ten, and low out to twenty. That is more usable range than most apartments have, and it means the far half of the room is a perfectly good home for medium and low-light plants. The problem is concentrated in the first few feet.
The first few feet are the hardest spot on this site. Maryland Extension puts the outdoor peak at "may exceed 10,000 ft-c" against a well-lit home interior "often less than 100 ft-c" (Maryland Extension, lighting for indoor plants, read 2026-08-28). Standing a plant against a floor-to-ceiling south-west pane in the afternoon is the closest an indoor spot gets to the outdoor end of that scale.
What too much light actually looks like, and why it is not a watering problem
Maryland Extension is specific. "Leaf scorch or sunburn can occur" when shade-loving plants meet full sun, showing as "pale, bleached or faded areas" that "eventually become brown and brittle." The mechanism: "Strong sun and heat cause the breakdown of chlorophyll in the leaf," and the severity increases when intense light combines with dry soil (Maryland Extension, excess light on indoor plants, read 2026-08-28).
The order of those words matters. Pale and bleached comes before brown. People usually notice the brown, decide the plant is thirsty, and treat a light problem as a water problem. If the pale stage appeared first and it appeared on the side facing the glass, the spot is the cause.
Maryland's other note is the one that connects the two halves: intense light plus dry soil is worse than intense light alone. Watering is a care question this site does not cover, and this is the one point where the placement decision and the care routine meet. Where they meet, the placement fix is the one under your control here: less light in that spot.
Building shade back into the room
Everything in this list is a placement move. None of it is a purchase recommendation, and none of it is advice about glazing or building work.
- Distance is the free control. Maryland notes light intensity diminishes with "the distance of the light source from the plant." Two paces back from a glass wall is a real change and, in a room with twenty feet of usable depth, it costs you nothing you needed.
- Use the plants you already have as shade. A tolerant plant in the front row shades what stands behind it. That is UGA's modifier list rebuilt indoors, and it is the single most effective thing you can do in a glass-walled room.
- Furniture is an overhang. A sideboard, a bookcase or a kitchen island casts a shadow with an edge that moves through the day. Watch where the edge falls at 3 pm rather than at 10 am.
- The floor above may be your eaves. If the unit above yours has a projecting balcony slab, your glass has an overhang and your room is not the extreme case at all. Check by standing at the glass and looking up.
- Hours, not just intensity. Maryland notes plants should not receive "more than 16 hours of light." In a glass-walled unit with the lights on in the evening, that ceiling is closer than you would think, and it is a reason to let one part of the room go dark at night.
The two aspects that cause most of the trouble in these units are south and west, and each has its own pattern through the day. Note how many of those profiles use the phrase "intolerant of direct sun." Three of the five plants this site most often recommends are explicitly ruled out of the front two feet by their own publishers. In a normal apartment those plants can sit almost anywhere. In a glass-walled one, the front row is genuinely off limits to them.
Moving a plant into that light, or out of it
A plant that has lived in a shop, a box or a dim corner is not ready for a glass wall on day one.
UGA Extension's guidance for a new plant is to "place newly purchased plants in bright areas for at least 3 to 4 weeks and then move them to their final location." Maryland's guidance for the reverse case, taking a low-light plant into strong sun, is to "place plants in full sun for 2 hours per day initially and gradually increase the length of sun exposure." That second one is written for moving plants outdoors, and a floor-to-ceiling south-west pane in the afternoon is the closest thing an indoor spot has to it, so it is the nearest published anchor rather than a rule written for your living room. We are naming that gap rather than pretending the guidance was written for this case.
Heat, and what is not published
A glass wall gets hot in the sun and so does the air beside it. UGA puts the workable range at "58 °F to 86 °F" and the preferred range at "70 °F to 80 °F during the day."
No extension publishes an air temperature for the space beside a floor-to-ceiling window, and none publishes what modern low-emissivity glazing does to either the light or the heat reaching a plant. Both would change the answer and neither is available, so no figure appears here. As with a cold sill, a thermometer at the plant's spot on a hot afternoon tells you your own number, which is the one that counts.

Frequently asked questions
Why do my plants burn in a high-rise apartment when the same plants were fine in my old place?
Because the modifiers are gone. UGA Extension lists trees, overhangs, wall color and curtains as the things that vary the light in a location, and a glass-walled unit above tree line has none of them unless you install them. It is not the height. It is the absence of everything that used to shade the room.
What does too much light look like on a houseplant?
Maryland Extension describes "pale, bleached or faded areas" that "eventually become brown and brittle," caused by strong sun and heat breaking down chlorophyll in the leaf. The pale stage comes first and is the one worth catching.
Which plants can sit right against a floor-to-ceiling window?

Does the glass in a modern building filter the sun?
Possibly, and nobody publishes a figure for it that we could find. Low-emissivity glazing is common in new buildings and would change both the light and the heat reaching a plant. Since no extension publication quantifies it, this page gives no number and suggests you judge your own unit by watching for the pale stage of scorch rather than by trusting a spec.
Is a hot glass wall a temperature problem as well as a light one?
UGA puts the workable range at 58 °F to 86 °F, and Maryland notes that intense light plus dry soil worsens scorch. No source publishes an air temperature beside a glass wall, so put a thermometer at the plant's spot on a hot afternoon and compare it to that range.
A note on pets
Bright front-row spots are often floor level and reachable. Whether a species is a risk to an animal is not something this site rules on. Check the plant by name against the ASPCA's toxic and non-toxic plant list, and take anything that has actually been eaten to a veterinarian.
